House types refer to the different kinds of houses that exist, i.e. the different categories of houses such as detached houses, apartments, studios, villas and others.

The house has been built to provide shelter and protection from the elements and environmental hazards. However, over time, different types of houses have developed that can offer different housing options. Plus, the type of house you inhabit can even be a status symbol (e.g. villa).

From apartments and villas to lofts and farmhouses, the options are endless. Consequently, this plurality can make you feel lost if you're looking for your favorite place in the world. Below we have summarized the main types of properties available. Let's look at them in more detail.

#1 Apartment in an apartment building

A condominium is made up of several apartments with the same or different square meters. Usually the apartments are available for rent and the residents share common areas, such as the entrance and elevators. Of course, many apartments in apartment buildings are privately owned. This type of housing is very popular in cities, as it allows people to live within walking distance of their place of work and city center. The floor of an apartment, regardless of its size, starts from basement - semi-basement and goes up to the top floor of an apartment building (20+). An apartment is divided, in turn, into a number of subcategories.

In particular:

  • Studio: It has a main space that combines a kitchen, living room and bedroom.
  • Two-bedroom: It has a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom.
  • Three-bedroom: Features two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom.
  • Floor apartment: A floor apartment is an apartment located in a condominium or other building that occupies an entire floor. Floor apartments usually have two or more bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room, as well as other spaces such as terraces, balconies or even attics.

#2 Detached house

A detached house is a detached building, usually consisting of a living room, kitchen, bedroom/rooms and bathroom. Also, a detached house can be built in various sizes and design styles, depending on the needs of the residents and their budget. Detached houses usually have a garden or courtyard, and are often used by families or couples who want to have their own independent residence and privacy. You will find a detached house both in the center and on the outskirts of large cities, as well as in areas with an abundance of country houses.

#3 Duplex house

A duplex consists of two independent apartments, which are usually located side by side or upstairs downstairs. Each apartment is an independent residential unit with its own entrance, living room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom. A duplex is usually a building constructed to accommodate two families or two family units that can live close together, but not necessarily share the same space. Of course, this varies from case to case and is not absolute, since different and independent families can live in a duplex.

#4 Villa

A villa is a large and luxurious house usually located in areas with views or near the coast/seas or in the suburbs of cities. It usually has one or more floors and is surrounded by a large garden or courtyard. Villas usually have several rooms and can accommodate large families or groups of people. They often have multiple rooms, fireplaces, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Villas usually also have swimming pools, saunas, gyms, cinema rooms and other amenities.

#5 Maisonette

A maisonette is a type of home that consists of two or more levels and is usually located in a multi-storey building. The first level of a maisonette usually includes the common area such as the living room, dining room and kitchen, while the second level includes bedrooms and bathrooms. And many times, they also have a basement, attic, and/or garage. Typically, maisonettes are larger than apartments and offer more space and independence to their residents. Maisonettes can be located in apartment buildings or in housing complexes, but they can also be independent residences with their own garden or yard.

#6 Loft

Lofts were originally created by renovating industrial buildings, such as factories and warehouses, and converting them into residences. Typically, they have no partition walls between rooms, with the exception of bathrooms and bedrooms. Instead, the various rooms of the house (such as the living room, dining room and kitchen) are located in an open and open plan area. The ceilings are usually high, with open windows underneath to allow natural light to enter. Most of them retain their industrial aesthetic.

#7 Rural residence (farm/ranch)

A farmhouse, also known as a farm or ranch, is a type of residence usually located in rural areas and associated with agriculture and animal husbandry. This type of dwelling usually includes large tracts of land, large-sized houses, and various structures for raising livestock and farming. Typically, a farmhouse includes a large kitchen, a dining room, bedrooms, and a storage room for farm tools and machinery.

💡 There are of course other types of houses, less popular in Greece, such as bungalows, floating houses, houses on "stilts", igloos (Eskimo ice houses), canal boats, and even caravans.
